Importance of Aging test on LED Lighting

Since Traditional HID Lighting Evolving into LED Lighting, we have moved into a electronic component sector today, so what that means is that the longevity of these product are highly dependent upon the thermal dissipation and how the electrical component can operate over a duration of period.

With LED chips and power supply, it is important to operate them at a requested operating temperature (as provided by specification) if operate above the said operating temperature, it means the components are now taking on more heat than it is designed for. This in terms can cause early life failure for some of these components.

Therefore, an LED Lighting which is designed to ensure the proper thermal heat dissipation is so important. Many manufacturers, when assembly LED Lighting Fixture, might not go through a proper aging test, this is very critical in the part of quality assurance for product.

Aging test, which means powering the LEDLighting Fixture for a duration of period, to Identify how the fixture is operating, in terms of its thermal and functional aspect. Aging test is critical, in detecting early life failures, whether it be poor soldering in power supply or LED PCB board, or simply identifying a higher operating temperature than originally designed.

All our LED lighting conduct through 4 Hours of Multiple voltage aging test, to identify any product which may cause early life failure, prior to shipping. It’s important in doing so to eliminate the faulty Products and prevent it from getting to the hands of the consumer.

Aside from aging test, there’s also alternative more intensive testing, like the HALT Testing (Highly Accelerated Lifetime Testing) where a harsh external environment is created to speed up the proceed of LED lighting. This Is important in the development stage of the product.

Common Features of Led Driver Apply to Outdoor Light that You Must Know

Something you need to know about the LED driver for outdoor application.

As LED lighting been rapidly adopt in commercial and industrial application in the past 10 years. Based on our customer’s feedback and our own evaluation:

High efficiency

It is known by fact that lower LED temperature increase the luminous efficiency LED, therefore a good heat dissipation of LED is very important. When LED driver is installed in the light fixture’s structure. A higher efficiency LED driver consume less power for converting AC power into DC power. Therefore, it will emit less non-useful power inside the lighting fixture, thus reducing the temperature rise of lighting fixture. By doing this we can maintain the light output and reduce the negative impact because of higher temperature and extend LED light’s lifetime.

High reliability

especially like the led driver of LED Flood light, generally they are installed outside, of course, maybe separate from the light fixture as well. such as hidden in the light pole or installed on the fixed bracket. We must comprehensively think of its waterproof, aluminum housing and any other performances. High reliability led driver is not easy to break and help to reduce the cost of maintenance.

High power factor

For commercial and industrial outdoor lighting, it is very common for lighting manufacturer to registered product with Design Lights Consortium. One of the requirement for Lighting Fixture certified as DLC listed is power factor must large than 0.9. The power factor of an AC power system is defined as the ratio of the real power absorbed by the load to the apparent power flowing in the circuit, and is a dimensionless number in the closed interval of −1 to 1. In an electric power system, a load with a low power factor draws more current than a load with a high power factor for the same amount of useful power transferred. The higher currents increase the energy lost in the distribution system, and require larger wires and other equipment the power factor is the load requirement of the power grid and is an important technical data of power system. Therefore, we only use LED driver with power factor higher than 0.9.

Constant Current and Constant Voltage driving methods.

It is common to see there are two type of LED driving method, one is Constant current and the other one is Constant voltage, what make it difference is the way in which they deliver the power. LED drivers are the main driving force that provides and regulates the needed power to make sure the LEDs operate in a safe and consistent condition.

Constant current LED drivers are designed for a selected range of output voltages and a fixed output current. Constant current driver requires a designated supply of current usually specified in (mA) or (A). These drivers vary the voltage along an electronic circuit which allows current to remain constant throughout the LED system. Higher current ratings do make the LED brighter, but if not regulated, the LED will draw more current than it is rated for. Thermal Runaway refers to excess current beyond the LEDs maximum drive current which results in drastically lower LED life-spans and premature burn outs due to increased temperature. A constant current driver is the best solution to drive high power LEDs as it maintains a consistent brightness across all LEDs in-series.

Constant voltage drivers are designed for a single direct current (DC) output voltage. It is quite common to have an 24VDC or 36VDC. An LED light that is rated for constant voltage usually specifies the amount of input voltage which needs to operate correctly. A constant voltage power supply receives standard line voltage. For USA’s residential application, it is usually 120V AC to 277V AC. This is the type of power that is typically output from the wall outlets in the home. Constant Voltage Drivers switch this alternating current voltage (VAC) to a low direct current voltage (VDC). The driver will always maintain a constant voltage no matter what kind of current load is put on it. Most often, constant voltage drivers are implemented in under-cabinet lights and other LED flex strip applications but it is not limited to those categories.

Surge protection

It sometimes called as surge protector, it is an indispensable device for electronic equipment to protect against lightning or surges. The function of the surge protector is to use components such as gas discharge tubes or varistors to discharge the transient over voltages such as strong lightning or surge currents into the power or signal transmission lines into the earth, limiting the voltage range of the equipment or system within the range that can withstand, the protected equipment or system will not be damaged by the electric shock (voltage surge). It is very common for outdoor lighting driver to have build in minimum 4kV surge protection.

Surge Protection Device- What is it and why do we actually need it?

One of the most common lighting failures, is the surge spike resulting in driver IC in the fixture to get damaged. So how does surge spike occur and how can we prevent it from damaging our lighting fixtures?

Most of the time one of the most common occurrence is due to regional voltage in spike, causing a sudden spike in the current going through the electrical circuit in the area. If the electronics or the LED lighting fixture does not provide sufficient enough surge protection, you are looking at an early life failure for that product.

Known as a surge protector, it is an indispensable device for electronic equipment to protect against lightning or surges.

Three reasons why choosing aluminum work light, not plastic ones

With some construction work on job-sites, working the car in the garage, or simply a need to light up our Backyard, a work light comes in handy, but seeing so many different types in the market, how do you know what is the right one to choose and what to avoid?

You might see a lot of work lights in home centers, with some with a lot of features and some just simply such low cost, we’ve compiled a few pointers when choosing work light to help you avoid stepping on potential landmines.

Aluminum vs Plastic-Which one to choose?

With more and more plastic housing work light in the market now. It offers a much more cost competitive solution. If you just want some temporary light source that does the job, and not looking to spend an arm and leg, simply buying a plastic work light is fine for you. However, there are few things you should remember:

1.    Plastic generally have a poorer dissipation than aluminum, therefore with some work light that offers up to 50-100W, plastic simply unable to dissipate such heat generated, meaning could cause early life failure. If a work light only runs about 10-20W(1000-1500lm) or so, there is not much heat generated from the LED therefore plastic is an acceptable option. However, if you are looking for some of those larger fixturesAluminum Die-Cast Housings offers optimal heat dissipation, to allow your fixture run for much Longer duration without overheating.

2.    If this work light have the chance to be left out in the sun for a longer duration, then plastic may not be the right choice. As plastic tends to become more fragile or easily crack after long period of UV exposure, having it in the sun doesn’t do too good for the product. Plastic also have a tendency to change color after a period of exposure to the sun. Aluminum work light on the other hand, do not have the issue of becoming more fragile after sun exposure.

3.    Plastic housings are generally made via plastic injection, where the plastic pallets from time to time can be recycled. Generally seeing the with lower cost plastic work light in the market, could correlate to poor quality plastic(higher percentage of recycled material) which in the long run, effects the quality and performance of the product as well.

For more heavy duty, long duration, high lumen application, it is still recommend to use aluminum Type work lights. Whilst from price aspect may be slightly higher than plastic, can guarantee in terms of durability it will last you a lot longer time.

Two Ways to Prevent Paint Peeling on Lighting Fixture

How often when you driving past residential area, when you see paint peeling off poles, walls, lights fixtures? Does not look pretty right?

Whilst paint peeling on commercial and residential lighting fixtures can occur more in areas with high air salinity (Florida and areas near ocean)

It’s important to know that It is not main cause for paint peeling.

What if we told you that paint peeling is something that can be easily avoided, through the right choose of powder coating material and correct treatment process during production. If done properly, The light fixture’s paint should last 10 years or more without any discoloration or peeling.

But First, why do some LED LightingFixtures display paint peel more than the Other?

When commercial/residential lightingfixtures such as FloodlightsArea LightsWall packs are manufactured, especially The aluminum base Fixtures, generally prior to applying the Powder Coating process, a lot of Fixtures don’t go through the proper surface treatment of the aluminum or Metal Parts. As with a lot of these aluminum fixtures, during production there is generally a layer of dirt/oil/Aluminum scraps or other substances found on the surface of the parts, If you don’t remove these, when you apply PowderCoating onto the Fixture, the layer of substances between the Aluminum Metal Parts and the powder Coating, will prevent the Coating to become fully adhesive onto the these Parts.

Over Time, When Lighting Fixture is exposed to UV, combine with the coating not being fully adhesive onto the LightingFixture, it causes the Paint to become detached from the surface of the Fixture, causing the Paint to Peel.

By knowing this, This is why we takes this matter very serious, and go through additional steps on their Lighting Fixtures in preventing the Paint from Peeling over time. All of First Lighting Fixtures go through a process which we call Pre-treatment Process. This Process applied during the assembly of Fixture, where all the Aluminum/ Metal Parts prior to Coating Process, we place these parts into Pools of cleansing agent to remove any excess and unwanted dirt or oily substances from the surface. Doing that is not enough, we then move the parts into a pool of Zinc Phosphate, and what that does is it adds an additional icoated layer onto the Aluminum Parts, so that when you implement Powder Coating, it allows Coating to become fully adhesive onto the surface, increasing the durability of the Paint.

Furthermore, we choose only the Best PowderCoating, a high UV resistance Powder Coating, to ensure the longevity and prevent any discoloration over a long duration use (tested for hundreds of hours in our Lab).

Our Goal is to ensure the longevity in our lighting product, whether it be performance or aesthetic appearance, which is why when choosing Ascent Technology, you can feel confident knowing the process we go through in making our lights.

Choosing the Right Floodlight-Three Tips You Should Know

LED Security Flood Light
Internet has not only created abundance of convenience in today’s society, it has also created a lot of issues. With thousands of Floodlights over the counter and over several online platforms, how do you make the right choice in buying the right type of Floodlights?

Today we compiled 3 tips on which Lights are the best choice when browsing through online, what types are best for which application, and what types are best to avoid:

1.      Lowest Price doesn’t always mean the best

With the convenience of Amazon/Wallmart and many online platforms, which allows anyone to be able to offer LightingProducts, however from time to time, it will also mean a lot of these product have not gone through proper validation. This could mean not going through proper aging, thermal testing, and all these could contribute to early life failure, so buy looking for the cheap product could result in having to replace the product again in 2-3 years. If you are buying expendable products like torch etc, then it would not matter, but having products like a lighting fixture, for example: floodlights, where it requires a large amount of labor to install, then go with companies that know what they are doing.  With companies has been doing lighting for over 30 years now, we’ve experienced it all and know how to build quality lights, as well as conducting through the proper validation. A General Rule of thumb: when your dividing the Fixtures Lumen output by the dollars sold, if the Lumen per dollar is over 500lumens/dollar, then chances are there is some falsified information of the product and that it should be avoided.

2.      Choosing COB/SMD can make a difference in terms of the application:

Are you looking for a simply wall wash flood? A bullet flood to shine a flag? An Area Light to cover the Parking lot? Whilst Lighting Product can be categorized into different application, the LED itself can also make a big difference in the longevity and the Light angle that comes out. For example, COB(Chips on Board) type LED Fixtures offer a more concentrated beam angle, which is generally Ideal for Spot Light(pin pointing on certain spot) However we also see Spot Lights today utilizing SMD for a more thermal dissipation alternative. For general Wall wash with no requirement for Beam Angle, we would generally look at Utility flood for maximum coverage in terms of the area. If you are unaware of what type of Lighting Distribution or type of lighting suitable for what application, please speak to your local Electrical Distributor or lighting specialist, or can contact us at info@firstlighting.com where we can provide solutions for your requirement.

3.      Different Mounting Options and what’s best for you

With every Lighting fixture, there is several ways of Mounting Options to install the Lighting Fixture, be sure to choose the right one that’s most suitable to the areas you will be installing it on. Whether it be Wall Mount(installing onto a Vertical Wall surface by connecting to a junction box of Conduit Pipe) Yoke/Trunnion Mount(a U-Bracket to allow Fixture to be able to adjust angle and lighting direction) or Knuckle/Slip fitter(installing onto Pole Mount or Pipes). Choosing the right Mounting Option will mean allowing the Fixture to be firmly installed and can prevent any loosening due to external environments. This will ensure the longevity of the Fixture in Operation.
